Dutch designer and entrepreneur Doreen Westphal, principal of KREJCI Studio Amsterdam gives reclaimed and recycled rubber inner tubes an extended life. They take the form of extremely useful (and durable) tote bags, satchels, backpacks, and handbags.
Their strong lines and honest craftsmanship give these bags a boldness, above and beyond their obvious eco-conscious credentials.
We find the Bin Totes above to be extraordinary; they exude a rigor and logic through their simplicity in form and function and materiality.
Within several years, Krejci has grown its international appeal. Westphal’s line is currently manufactured in Poland, acquiring used bicycle inner-tubes from the surrounding bike-friendly European continent.
Several events and trade shows such as the Maison & Objet Paris have spread Westphal’s vision for stylish, yet responsible and durable consumer goods.
Perhaps we can anticipate, in the coming decades, more creative designs and re:uses for bicycle inner tubes. After all, our growing world population and dwindling fossil fuels may undoubtedly lead to an increasing necessity for human powered transportation, and thus inner tubes. That is until we invent an alternative to rubber inner tubes!
