The national game of Madagascar, Fanorona, is played with black and white pieces on a diagonally gridded board. In the 19th century, diviners used the game as a means of fortune telling, looking for a deeper understanding of the present and of future days ahead. Some would scratch the pattern in dirt, using stones, beans or even berries as markers of prediction.
